Problem with Windows 10 and NetBeans 112, won't install

wombat_rrnut

All:

I recently installed on a Windows 7 system:

OpenJDK11U-jdk_x64_windows_hotspot_11.0.7_10.msi

Followed directly by:

Apache-NetBeans-11.2-bin-windows-x64.exe

No problem.

Just got a Windows 10 system, have the EXACT same 2 install files on it.

Installed no problem:

OpenJDK11U-jdk_x64_windows_hotspot_11.0.7_10.msi

Then

Apache-NetBeans-11.2-bin-windows-x64.exe

Get the following error (see attached .jpg)

Issue Java from command prompt, no problem, so Javahome set properly.

Tried Apache-NetBeans-11.2.-bin-windows-x64 –javahome C:\Program Files\AdoptOpenJDK\jdk-11.0.7.10-hotspot\bin

(per screen instruction)

That didn’t work either.

What gives?

Greg

I don't know, but I would try to uninstall OpenJDK and then try to download and install JDK from this page:

https://www.oracle.com/java/technologies/javase-jdk11-downloads.html

not sure how I did it, as I recall I didnt have to do anything special, but got
this setup. Netbeans 11.3
and java 11 from OpenJDK11U-jdk_x64_windows_hotspot_11.0.6_10.exe
Product Version: Apache NetBeans IDE 11.3
Java: 11.0.6; OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM 11.0.6+10
Runtime: OpenJDK Runtime Environment 11.0.6+10
System: Windows 10 version 10.0 running on amd64; Cp1252; en_CA (nb)

Daniel:

For posterity (in case someone has problems in the future)
Netbeans 11.2 under Windows 10 (not Windows 7) seems
to "require" its own Oracle JDK (as of 7/18/20) 11.0.8 (what worked).

Thanks Daniel, that worked first time like it should have
Go figure!

I suspect (I'm cynical) that Oracle put in the NetBeans
Installer some feature (even though it was the EXACT
same image (.exe) as Windows 7), that when you are
Windows 10, you MUST use their "stuff".

:-) As a result, Big Brother (Oracle) is now watching me! :-)

Thanks. I tried Daniels suggestion first, and that worked
first time, like it should have and did under Windows 7,
except have use Oracles JDK instead of AdoptOpenJDK.net
(My machine a "screamer" is brand new out of the
box from Dell today).

Randall:

Hopefully I’ll explain myself better here:

OOPPSS, you are right, NetBeans is NOT Oracle, Apache.  I have to remember where I get things

from a month+ ago.  Sorry, bad memory.  Read on:

Background:

(My Mantra: if it works, don’t xxxx with it!)

On my old Windows 7 machine, I (with your and others help)

was able eventually to upgrade it to NetBeans 11.2 using JDK 11.0.7 from AdoptOpenJDK.

(this was a month+? ago if memory serves).  The two installer files

were put on my “toaster oven” network mass storage device (Raid 5) so I always know

what I have where.

So, I decided that I should duplicate that exactly (since it worked, yea right!)

on my brand new Windows 10 “screamer” (8 CPU, 8 Hyper, 4.85Ghz) machine.  Well, we now know that didn’t work.

(per prior emails).  So NOW I have JDK 11.0.8 from Oracle, and that allowed 11.2 to install.

(I’m just now installing git so I can download source).  Haven’t tried to run anything yet….

So now I will pause installation (no problem, I’m patient), based upon your comment about NetBeans 12.

(I’m willing to try new stuff now, forget my mantra “If it works….” for now).

Now, I feel like I’m standing on quick sand again.  Should I de-install 11.2, and

go for 12?  Is 12 stable (I assume since you mention it)?

(by the way, 11.2’s “Refactor” now takes about 20* longer than the old NetBeans I was

using (I can’t remember its version)).

Is 12 worse or better than 11.2?  Or forget that comment, maybe we “must”? standardize on

12, and the more people that use 12, the better the feel that it works and can recommend

to others?  I’m willing to help along that path if you feel that is correct?

Sincerely

Greg

OpenJDK11U-jdk_x64_windows_hotspot_11.0.7_10.msi

Followed directly by:

Apache-NetBeans-11.2-bin-windows-x64.exe

No problem.

Just got a Windows 10 system, have the EXACT same 2 install files on
it.

Installed no problem:

OpenJDK11U-jdk_x64_windows_hotspot_11.0.7_10.msi

Then

Apache-NetBeans-11.2-bin-windows-x64.exe

Get the following error (see attached .jpg)

Issue Java from command prompt, no problem, so Javahome set properly.

Tried Apache-NetBeans-11.2.-bin-windows-x64 -javahome C:\Program
Files\AdoptOpenJDK\jdk-11.0.7.10-hotspot\bin

(per screen instruction)

That didn't work either.

What gives?

Greg

No worries. I was just curious, mostly because often the easiest path is to download the most current version of something.

I forget if it was 11.3 or 12 that fixed the refactoring after 11.2.

If you remember, I tried (on the Windows 7 machine) about 40 different combinations of things, and the

I didn’t want to experiment further, since that combination

Coming to this late, but:

When you first tried this, you first reported this, you were using neither the current release of NetBeans (12.0) nor OpenJDK 11 (11.0.8). Why not?

Which vendor’s packaging of OpenJDK were you using (I am assuming AdoptOpenJDK’s but we know how useful assumptions are)?

NetBeans is not maintained by Oracle; it is an Apache foundation project.

I don't know, but I would try to uninstall OpenJDK and then try to download
and install JDK from this page:

Good, I was worried that sometimes emotions

are miscommunicated, especially when I typo’d “did” vs (correct) “didn’t”

Have you tried 12?  If so and it works, I’ll do the same.

Refactoring takes WAY too long.

Thanks.
